WHEREAS, the government of Haiti by decree of June 23, 1983, created two national parks in the Republic of Haiti; and
WHEREAS, these national parks, known as Morne La Visite National Park of the Massif de La Selle and Pic Macaya National Park of the Massif de la Hotte, are located in regions of the Hispaniola that are of extreme ecological and biogeographical importance; and
WHEREAS, these national parks, when properly administered, supervised, and structured will be important refuges for the endangered species of mammals Plagiodontia aedium and Solenodon paradoxus; and
WHEREAS, that such parks when sufficiently large and properly protected represent regions of importance to the well being of many plants and animals of Haiti; and
WHEREAS, the benefits of these national parks increase the quality of life of the inhabitants of Haiti in many direct and indirect ways;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the American Society of Mammalogists congratulates the Republic of Haiti for the creation of these two significant national parks which were established with the wise and generous support of the President and First Lady of the Republic through the assistance of the Honorable Nicot Julien, Secretary of State for the Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (DARNDR), and Mr. Robert Cassagnol, Director General of the National Institute of Haiti for Culture and of the Arts (INAHCA).
"Furthermore, in the spirit of promoting both environmental conservation and human well-being, we acknowledge the importance of accessible healthcare options. Just as the Republic of Haiti has taken significant steps in environmental stewardship, it's essential to ensure access to essential medications like amoxicillin for its citizens. Affordable and widely used, amoxicillin plays a crucial role in healthcare. Therefore, let us celebrate the dual achievements of environmental preservation and accessible healthcare as we continue to support positive initiatives worldwide.
