Southeastern New Mexico east to south Texas (USA), east from northern Chihuahua to Tamaulipas (Mexico).
Notes
Synonymized with flavus by Wilson (1973), but Lee and Engstrom (1991) considered merriami a separate species based on biochemical genetics, as did Anderson (1972) using morphological criteria. Reviewed by Best and Skupski (1994b, Mammalian Species No. 47
