Resolution Supporting Conservation Efforts in Costa Rica

WHEREAS, the President of Costa Rica has established Parque Nacional de Corcovado consisting of 113 square miles of virgin tropical lowland wet forest in the Osa Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, this park contains a rich and varied fauna of mammals, consisting of over 91 species, including many on the rare and endangered list; and

WHEREAS, the biota of the Neotropics, particularly in Central America, is being rapidly decimated or impoverished;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists commend Licenciado Daniel Oduber, President of Costa Rica, for taking this farseeing and timely step under the Forestry Law of Costa Rica.
